Green ideas to design the future

For one month, Riga becomes host to an international crowd of young talented people who create imaginative and eco-friendly design projects. The second edition of Design.Future, the International Young Designers Biennial in the Latvian capital, runs from October 15 until November 16, 2009 and includes design exhibitions, creative workshops and seminars focusing on eco-thinking, which involves the production, use, lifetime and recycling of a product.

Graphic Arts with a hi-tech touch

Over its fifty-year long history the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts has received tremendous acclaim from artists, experts and public alike and has become one of the world's biggest and most renowned events of the kind. This multifaceted event consists of a number of exhibitions as well as other happenings that attract the world’s best artists to the Slovene capital every second year. The flagship of this year’s 28th edition of the Biennial is the exhibition The Matrix: An Unstable Reality, on view in Ljubljana for two months from September 4 to October 25, 2009.

Gothenburg’s Wonderful World

Over ten weeks, from 5 September to 15 November, the city of Gothenburg, becomes Sweden's largest meeting place for international contemporary art. Sweden will stand on the world stage for contemporary art and visitors will be able to acquaint themselves with artists from around the world. In this fifth edition, Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art uses as its theme the famous Louis Armstrong song, What a Wonderful World, to reflect on the development of politics in a visual, poetic and sensual way.

Greece’s two ‘invisible’ biennials

The northern Greek city of Thessaloniki had always felt in rivalry with the nation’s capital Athens. Being the country’s second largest city with a population of one million, Thessaloniki has a long tradition as a center of the arts and culture in northern Greece. This year, the two “rival” cities are both presenting the second editions of their international art biennials. There’s only one tiny problem. Very few in Greece have any knowledge that they are happening!
