Green ideas to design the future

For one month, Riga becomes host to an international crowd of young talented people who create imaginative and eco-friendly design projects. The second edition of Design.Future, the International Young Designers Biennial in the Latvian capital, runs from October 15 until November 16, 2009 and includes design exhibitions, creative workshops and seminars focusing on eco-thinking, which involves the production, use, lifetime and recycling of a product.

Design to win the Cold War

It seems incredible that the battle to win people's hearts and minds during the cold war that divided Europe and much of the rest of the world during the years following the Second World War could be symbolised by an American kitchen! The National Art Gallery of the Lithuanian Art Museum autumn exhibition Cold War Modern: Design 1945-70 explains how this was made possible as it examines contemporary design, architecture, film and popular culture on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War era. You can visit it in Vilnius from October 2 to December 7, 2009.

Electricity as never seen before

After Shanghai in 2008 and Washington DC last March, Visual Voltage hits Europe’s capital like a thunder. Hopefully, the hands-on Swedish interactive show will help enhance our understanding of energy and encourage interest in environmental issues and energy usage. The Visual Voltage exhibition will be on show from September 10 to October 25 at the the Design Vlaanderen in Brussels, before it goes to Berlin in November 2009 and has two more stops in 2010.

Art Deco has enemies?

Art Deco at its most successful and its strongest critics sit comfortably side by side in the exhibition of José Berardo’s large collection of furniture and objects that we can see at the Berardo Museum in Lisbon’s Praça do Império. This very interesting exhibit, titled Art Deco and its enemies, showcases objects made by famous designers in the 20s and later, restored to the context of the 1925 Exposition in Paris. Visit it until September 20 and learn some more on that current that is so often misunderstood.

Brussels set for the Design September

Launched 2006 within the framework of the Fashion and Design year, the Design September festival brings together fifty events focusing on all kinds of applications of industrial design: furniture, objects, industrial products, graphic design, architecture, the discipline is enormous and affects a broad public. For the fourth consecutive year, from September 10 to October 2, 2009, a crowd of associations, institutions and other independent organizations tune up their violins in Brussels to offer a rich and varied programme of exhibitions, conferences, private showings, film screenings, debates, visits to designers’ studios, flea market, city tours, pecha kucha, and so on.
