Balkan artists join forces

Artists from Greece, Romania, Serbia, Albania and Bulgaria join forces and present a group show to exchange views and express their will for collaboration and the quest for common cultural grounds. This interesting reunion takes place at Bucharest’s Cotroceni National Museum until January 15, 2010, giving the visitor an opportunity to discover common Balkan tendencies in contemporary art. The exhibition Balkanic Art Inspirations is a joint project with the Melenia Art Gallery.

Talking about the misplaced individual

The Wakefield Meadows exhibition at Bucharest’s Center for contemporary art & culture Pavillion Unicredit from December 3 until February 7, 2010, is an artificial living environment generated by the real-life experiences of curator Anca Mihulet and of the artists Adrian Alecu, Olivia Mihaltianu, >projektgruppe<, SOSka and Adrien Tirtiaux.

Exploring the Return of Repression

An exhibition at Bucharest’s Center for contemporary art & culture Pavilion Unicredit until November 22 asks the crucial questions that can help us understand the reasons why it is so often that regimes and governments turn against their own citizens. Through paintings, photographs and installations by Romanian and international artists, curator Răzvan Ion assisted by Silvia Vasilescu make the key equation: Repression manages poverty. Poverty depresses wages. Low wages increase the rate of exploitation and create profit. Which is the main purpose of the state.

Faces of Modernism

Fifty five distinguished artists from Romania, Bulgaria and Greece and 120 of their most representative paintings form the complete panorama of Modernist art in the three countries. This survey will be on display at the National Art Museum of Romania (MNAR) for two months, from October 1 to November 29, 2009. After Bucharest, the exhibition Faces of Modernism: Bulgaria, Romania, Greece. Painting 1910-1940 will travel to Sofia and then Athens.

Opera season opening in Bucharest

The 2009/2010 season at the National Opera House in Bucharest opened early this year together with the 19th edition of the annual George Enescu International Festival with four of last season’s best opera productions (Enescu’s Oedipus, Verdi’s Othello and Macbeth, and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut) and one ballet (Swan Lake) in its programme running until the end of September 2009. For the next two months, October and November, the repertoire is rich with past productions you should see if you missed them last year.

Bucharest pumps up the volume

Romanian Theatre celebration

The crème de la crème of the productions in the last Romanian theatre season’s can be seen in a packed ten-day explosive festival in Bucharest that has been followed by theatregoers for 19 consecutive years. The 2009 edition of the Romanian National Theatre Festival takes place from October 31 to November 9, with performances by companies all over the countries given in several leading theatres of the Romanian capital.

Anim’est fun in Bucharest

More than 300 short and feature animation films, video-clips and commercial TV spots can be enjoyed during the Anim’est International Animation Festival that takes place in Bucharest for the fourth year, from 2 to 11 of October. This year’s edition has a series of treats for the animation aficionados, such as star–movies, which received awards in important festivals, animation films by Romanian students and special guests. What’s more important, a great deal of those films premiere in Romania.

A George Enescu celebration

This is certainly the top event in the Romanian classical music calendar and one of the best festivals of the kind in Europe. The 19th edition of the annual George Enescu International Festival and Competition, scheduled for August 30 - September 26, pays special tribute to Romania's most famous composer and musician on the 128th anniversary of his birth, in 1881.
