From One Extreme to the Other

Nat Finkelstein was one of the most respected photojournalists of modern times. Renowned for his iconic and intimate documentation of Andy Warhol’s infamous Factory, and later for his political activism including an allegiance with The Black Panthers that forced him to live abroad for 15 years, Finkelstein remained at the heart of the cultural zeitgeist up until his death aged 76, 2nd October 2009. This retrospective at London’s Idea Generation Gallery from January 20 to February 14, 2010, brings together Finkelstein’s diverse portfolio of work achieved across five decades.

What’s in a gay icon?

Exploring gay social and cultural history through unique personal insights and fascinating, inspirational stories, the exhibition on display at London’s National Portrait Gallery showcases sixty photographic portraits of famous people, as they were selected by a team of ten high profile gay figures, including Elton John and Sandi Toksvig. The historical and modern icons of the ten, you can see in this exhibit, on pulic view until October 18, 2009.

Madonna nudes in London

In 1979 the as yet unknown 20 year old Madonna posed nude for just $30 for New York photographer Martin Schreiber. Later when she had become a global icon the shots appeared in Playboy, catapulting Schreiber to fame. Thirty years on, the original photographs are on show in Seven Dials, London, as Madonna fever hits town ahead of her Sticky & Sweet tour on July 4-5. The nude photographs will be on display from 2 to 19 of July, coming to London from Brighton, where they were exhibited as part of the city’s Festival Fringe.
