Ouka Leele’ utopian images

Ouka Leele, a prestigious Spanish female photographer with an art career dating back to the late 70’s, ranks among the landmark figures of Europe as a contemporary of the American female artist Cindy Sherman. She is also one of the participants of the new wave cultural movement La Movida, which began in Spain, especially in Madrid, during the 80s with the arrival of Democracy, and swept all over the European continent. The Maltese public will have the opportunity to see some of her landmark works in a show presented at the St. James Cavalier Center’s Main Hall from January 8 until February 7, 2010.

Mario Borg Sillato’s solo in Valletta

Maltese artist Mario Borg Sillato has been experimenting with a technique which simulates graffiato with scratching on wood surfaces and inlays of paint. These ''engravings' normally celebrate human and animal life, often depicted in a chiaroscuro style. Visitors to Valletta, Malta, have the opportunity to see his work in an exhibition mounted at the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity from November 27 to January 3, 2010.

Red carpet treatment in Valletta

Reputed to be Europe's third-oldest working theatre -and the oldest in the Commonwealth of Nations- the Teatru Manoel on Valletta’s Old Theatre Street (Triq it-Teatru l-Antik) is now Malta's National Theatre and home to the National Orchestra of Malta. The new season in the small, 623-seat venue of lavish architectural majesty offers a variety of concerts and recitals, drama and dance performances, as well as musicals and pantomime shows, from October 23, 2009, to May 11, 2010.

Choristers invade Malta

New York’s Met Opera in Malta

The New York Metropolitan Opera's experiment of merging film with live performance has created a new art form. The groundbreaking series of live, high-definition Saturday performance transmissions into movie theatres in more than 35 countries around the world has enjoyed box office success, reaching an estimated audience of more than 1.1 million viewers last year. In 2009-10, the Met offers its fourth season of international HD transmissions -this time with nine broadcasts. In Malta, you can watch live Met’s thrilling, world-class opera at Valletta’s St. James Cavalier Centre.

Izzo’s empty spaces

Creating art out of absolute emptiness is what Maltese designer and artist Jean Karl Izzo does best and this is what he wants us to witness in his first solo show hosted at the Upper Galleries of the St James Cavalier Centre in Valletta. Izzo’s exhibition, titled Spazi, meaning Spaces, will be on show from November 6 to December 13, featuring works on canvas, board and paper with the use of paint and mixed media that reflect his ideas developed within the past four years.

Clay joins artists from Cyprus and Malta

After four previous occasions where a group of Maltese ceramists exhibited jointly with another group of ceramists from Cyprus. in Mdina (2004) and Valletta (2008) and in Larnaka (2004 and 2007), another group exhibition of works by artists from the two Mediterranean islands is set to take place at the Upper Galleries of the St. James Cavalier Centre of Valletta, from September 12 to October 25.
