‘I Land’ in Cyprus

Opening on December 9 at Diatopos Gallery, I Land, the third solo exhibition of Greek Cypriot artist Melita Couta, is presenting the cartography of an improbable land. The artist is using several media, among them a series of drawings, ink on paper, in which tenuous and innumerable lines intermingle skillfully, spread their plait in various shades, and bring to our mind the memory of Atopos, a non-existing place. Rosângela Rennó’s Ring

Brazilian artist Rosângela Rennó's work is predominantly photography-based, although she rarely takes photographs of her subjects. Instead, she recasts and transforms appropriated photographic images. In the past, she presented anonymous portraits compiled from existing photographs - photographers' studios and even photographs of prisoners' tattoos. From November 23 to January 15, 2010, the Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art in Nicosia is presenting an exhibition of her works, titled Ring, as part of the Brazilian Culture Month 2009.

Through a broken mirror

The famed Greek-Cypriot architect Zenon Sierepeklis presents his most important architectural projects alongside works of art from different fields in an exhibition titled Through a Broken Mirror at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre. Sierepeklis’ architectural drawings are displayed next to the sculptures and his photographic work, while artworks are complemented by extracts from interviews that the architect gave to various publications. Two days for the xperimental spirits

Celebrating its 8th year, the Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation Festival continues to pioneer within the experimental scene of Cyprus, while the Pantheon Cultural Association in Nicosia strives to enforce its annual festival into a globally well established entity which will continue to keep standards and a niche to those interested in the field. The 8th edition of the festival was embraced by 136 artists and runs for two days, November 27 and 28, at the Pantheon Gallery and Pantheon Tritos on the third floor.

Theatre gems for the new season

Four new productions make up the programme of Cyprus’ main state theatre for the first half of the new season that runs until the beginning of January 2010. The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (ThOC) is the leading stage on the island and has been presenting top Cypriot and foreign productions in Cyprus and abroad. This year the season kicks off on October 11 with a children’s play that has been a major success in many countries: Jeff Brumbeau’s The Quiltmaker's Gift Sunday morning performances. Three more premieres take place in November: Brian Clark’s Whose life is it anyway?, David Eldridge’s Festen and Ovid’s adaptation of Metamorphosis.

Cyprus Symphony Orchestra new season

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is kicking off the new season 2009/2010 with a series of concerts in cities and the countryside all over the island. Being the main state symphony orchestra since 2006, when it was founded, CySO plays an important role in the cultural life of Cyprus, by presenting symphonic performances for audiences of all ages and promoting knowledge and cultivating appreciation for classical music. This new season CySO is giving 22 concerts as part of its regular season program and another 7 as part of the Community Outreach Programme “Music for All”.

The magic of puppets thrills Cyprus

Once a small village on the south east outskirts of Nicosia, Latsia is today one of the largest and most populous suburbs of the Cypriot capital. For the last three years, Latsia has been playing host to the only major event focused on the art of puppetry and mime. The International Puppet and Mime Festival of Cyprus, organized by the municipality of Latsia, is bringing to the Mediterranean island some of the best theatre companies of the genre from around the world. This year, there is a full program of events starting at 9am on October 22 with the last performances on November 2.

The interior world of objects

Using everyday objects that collected from both sides of the divided city of Nicosia, American artist Elizabeth Hoak Doering makes a strong comment on the way things mark the passage of time and become actors in the compilation and composition of history. In her exhibition titled amanuensis, at the Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art in Nicosia until November 13, the artist sets up a haunting scenario in which the interior world of things is revealed, upending the usual subject-object relationship that people have with objects around them.

Evenings of music at Bellapais Abbey

X-Dreams for the young

A festival by the young for the young. This is what the X-Dream Arts Festival is all about according to the organizers of the ARTos Cultural and Research Foundation in Nicosia. Running for a month, from September 10 to October 8, the event aspires to provoke the “X-Dream” imagination of young artists, by presenting three live music concerts, two theatre plays, a video art performance and an audiovisual show.

Lia’s Party Animals

The idea of man as a social animal that uses body language to communicate is central in the dance piece of Cypriot choreographer and performer Lia Haraki, presented as part of the programme of the Kypria International Festival by her group pelma.lia haraki in Larnaka (Sep 26), Limassol (Sep 29-30) and Nicosia (Oct 3-4). Haraki’s work titled Party Animals follows the relations that are developed among three individuals, who are invited to a party, as well as among the performers and the audience.

A delicious art-e-choke

Two Cyprus-based cultural institutions join forces and present a group art exhibition titled Art-e-choke, featuring 35 works by young Greek Cypriot artists. The event, which runs only for three days, is hosted by the First Lady of the Cyprus Republic Mrs. Elsi Christofia and can be visited at Nicosia’s ARTos Cultural and Research Foundation from 15 to 18 of October 2009.

Cyprus welcomes top dancers

Cyprus has taken contemporary dance seriously and this is good news for the lovers of the genre, who are nothing but few. A new audience has emerged for this kind of shows and this was obvious last June during the three weeks of the European Dance Festival. Clay joins artists from Cyprus and Malta

After four previous occasions where a group of Maltese ceramists exhibited jointly with another group of ceramists from Cyprus. in Mdina (2004) and Valletta (2008) and in Larnaka (2004 and 2007), another group exhibition of works by artists from the two Mediterranean islands is set to take place at the Upper Galleries of the St. James Cavalier Centre of Valletta, from September 12 to October 25.
