Dochev’s industrial worlds

Peter Dochev’s name is associated with the birth and development of industrial landscape painting in Bulgarian art during the second half of the twentieth century. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the Sofia City Art Gallery presents a retrospective exhibition aiming at giving a comprehensive idea of Peter Dochev’s work following his artistic evolution throughout the years. Sweden discovers Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich, the leading painter of the German Romantic era, is nowadays regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of art. Nevertheless, he remains relatively unknown in Sweden outside art history circles. This October, Nationalmuseum sets out to change this by presenting Scandinavia’s first monographic exhibition of works by Friedrich. In all, over 90 artworks will be on show, including some 40 paintings, until January 10, 2010.

Freud's theories through masterpieces

For the first time, the exhibition Eros & Thanatos–Drives, Images, Interpretations, on view at the Sigmund Freud Museum and in the Historic Library of the Liechtenstein Museum, thematizes Freud’s theory of drives through exceptional works of fine art. Paintings, drawings, prints, enamels and sculptures by artists including Dürer, Rubens, Bellucci, Klimt and Schiele illustrate the interplay between the life and death drives. Between Metaphor and Object

Van Gogh speaks

A landmark exhibition to celebrate the publication of the new international edition of the complete correspondence of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is to be presented at the Van Gogh Museum’s Rietveld building in Amsterdam from 9 October 2009 to 3 January 2010. In the exhibition Van Gogh's letters: The artist speaks, some 120 original letters will be exhibited alongside the works that Van Gogh was writing about.

Monet and Japan: the time of Water Lilies

The lush blues, greens, pinks and purples of Claude Monet's Water Lilies series are at the heart of a Milan exhibition which explores the French impressionist's relationship with Japanese art. With 20 large paintings by the father of French Impressionism from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, 56 Japanese prints from the Musée Guimet also in Paris as well as a selection of 19th-century photographs of Japanese gardens, the exhibition Monet and Japan, the Time of Water Lilies at Milan’s most prestigious venue, the Palazzo Reale, runs until September 27, 2009.
